Babies Born Addicted to Drugs is Skyrocketing in the U.S.
The number of infants born with a drug withdrawal syndrome called neonatal abstinence syndrome tripled between 2000 and 2009, jumping to more than 13,000 according to a study published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome tend to be irritable, have heightened muscle tone, tremors, feeding intolerance, seizures, and difficulty breathing. These babies are also more likely to be born with low birth weights.
About 16 percent of teens and 7 percent of pregnant women aged 18 to 25 use illicit drugs according to infomration cited in the above mentioned report. These numbers do not include those babies exposed to the Desginer Drugs like Bath Salts and K2. These drugs are so new the medical community does not know how these drugs will affect growing babies. Professionals across the board do not know what care these babies will need after birth.
